So I'm reading Android 6 for Programmers: An App-Driven Approach and the first two app examples I had no issues with the examples, this time the FlagQuiz example when loaded in Android Studio 3.0 Canary-3 I'm getting this error which isn't letting me build the project:
Error:Unsupported method: BaseConfig.getApplicationIdSuffix(). The version of Gradle you connect to does not support that method. To resolve the problem you can change/upgrade the target version of Gradle you connect to. Alternatively, you can ignore this exception and read other information from the model.
You can download the source from the book site here to test with the same code base that I'm testing from.

Alright I figured out how to fix this issue.
- Open build.gradle and change the gradle version to the recommended version:
classpath 'com.android.tools.build:gradle:1.3.0'
toclasspath 'com.android.tools.build:gradle:2.3.2'
- Hit
'Try Again'
- In the messages box it'll say
'Fix Gradle Wrapper and re-import project'
Click that, since the minimum gradle version is3.3
- A new error will popup and say
The SDK Build Tools revision (23.0.1) is too low for project ':app'. Minimum required is 25.0.0
- HitUpdate Build Tools version and sync project
- A window may popup that says
Android Gradle Plugin Update recommended
, just update from there.
Now the project should be runnable now on any of your android virtual devices.

I am facing the same problem. I just Restart Android studio with invalidate Cache and it's work for me.
But when I use the stable version for
Android studio 3.6
it perfectly works for me. Wednesday, June 2, 2021

If you are using the new Jack compiler with version 2.2.0 or newer, you do not need the 'android-apt' plugin and can instead replace apt with annotationProcessor when declaring the compiler dependency.

I solved my issue by changing
classpath 'com.android.tools.build:gradle:2.3.3'
to
classpath 'com.android.tools.build:gradle:3.0.1'
in project
build-gradle
this will cause a flavoring issue ,that can be solved by adding
flavorDimensions 'default'
in application
build-gradle
this may help some one with same problem.

I was getting a similar error today opening a project after upgrading to Android Studio 0.3.6. Here is what I had to change to get it working again for me.
- Changed the following line in gradle-wrapper.properties from gradle-1.6-bin.zip to gradle-1.8-bin.zip
distributionUrl=http://services.gradle.org/distributions/gradle-1.8-bin.zip
Unsupported Versions Of Windows 10
- Also changed the following line in build.gradle from 0.5.+ to 0.6.+
classpath 'com.android.tools.build:gradle:0.6.+'
Chrome Cannot Update Android Version Is Unsupported Windows 10
In Windows, gradle-wrapper.properties is located at project foldergradlewrappergradle-wrapper.properties
build.gradle is located at project foldermodule folderbuild.gradle
The Files that Needed changed are highlighted in the project explorer screen shot below.
After those changes I sync'd the project with the gradle files and then could build and test.
Hope that helps.
Note that you should use default or customizable gradle wrapper:
